I don’t think we can blame her office for the lack of magazine work… yeah, a big agency helps, but Yoko, Miri, Rio among many others (heck, Ai Shinozaki’s agency is/was probably as small as Minami Narusawa’s), were never in big agencies but they managed to get plenty work based on their gravure popularity.

It seems to be more a change in the gravure or entertainment landscape, busty idols have never been nearly as popular than their flat-chested comrades, and now it is probably worse… Rio and Ourei Harada got popular after winning special prizes in the Miss Magazine contest ca. 2003, and these days, magazine contests will not even have anyone close to Rio’s caliber, it just does not seem to be the age of busty idols anymore and editors seem to be steering clear from them.

Who knows… maybe print is dead, SABRA went out of business (still exists in digital, it seems) but maybe more magazines have gone under and the ones that keep going have seen their print runs diminishing, making it less attractive for girls compared to just shooting DVDs. If we look at Mai Nishida, Anri and Mikie’s work from 2011, it seems to have shrunk a lot compared to 2-3 years ago, yet they seem to be as popular (if not more -both Nishida and Anri just made double IV releases) than ever, even Risa Yoshiki, who seems to be the current “Yoko Ogura” can’t hold a candle to what Ogura’s work output was during her prime… if a big name like Mikie are having trouble finding as much work as she used to have, new faces like Tomomi, Ayami, Kyoko, etc. are out of luck… but their steady DVD output probably tells us they’re successful enough.

I’am avid reader of your column Mike. Agree with you on what you say about the four best models in the gravure world. But for me i can change the positions :

She is absolutely magnificent, and knows exactly what she’s doing. I couldn’t take my eyes off her in this DVD, particularly the scenes with the yellow bikini and the white one-piece. After Tama Mizuki’s latest disappointing and distasteful outing, this DVD cemented Rui’s position as my favourite of the current crop of idols.

Thanks for the comments Malau – yes the time are certainly changing – I got my first gravure DVDs in 2003, and back then, the four models who were either just getting their careers started or were already near the top of the line:

Matsugane
Nemoto
Natsume
and MEGUMI.

But time does March on. Speaking of Mikie Hara, I will have a review of her most recent DVD coming up soon along with new reviews of the other top shelf models of today: Rui Kiriyama, Mai Nishida, Anri Sugihara, Kyoko Fujimi, and Ayami Sawada.

Of those, Kiriyama, Nishida, and Sugihara are near or are the top of the entire gravure industry (in my opinion). Fujimi is a wanna be, and Ayami Sawada is a case of being a great model who, speaking plainly and simply, just doesn’t get a lot of work (is it her management agency?)

As for Ai Shinozaki, she has a new DVD (SBVD-130) to be released on Dec 23rd.

She’s one of those models who was unfortunate enough to get tied down to a seemingly ineffective Management Agency, who don’t seem to be able to get her the high profile magazine sets that her body deserves.

Instead, the top magazine’s seem to feature the same old same old likes of Yoko Kumada (with her heinous implants), Sayaka Isoyama (repeating the same tired work over and over – just get your tits out or eff off fatty !), and Mikie Hara (Queen of the airbrush), or Ai Shinozaki (no complains there, but her work is very tame).

With Takizawa retired, and Matsugane semi-retired there’s a massive void in the market for a massive pair of (natural) tits with a personality.
Mamoru Asana has a shot at this, but if Tomomi had a competent Agency she should be up there too.

Ah yes – the sweet Yuuka – Unforgettable. Thanks again for the comments. I only go back to 2003 with idol videos myself – Rio Natsume and Harumi Nemoto were the first two idols I purchased.
