
Miyabi Isshiki – Colorful (August 25th, 2009)

The Skinny: Unfortunately, Momow strikes again. For those of you who don’t know who this is – this is the director of this video, and other gravure videos, including previously released DVDs with Miyabi, and even Miri Hanai. From this director what you get is the “I’m primary, and the model is secondary” mode of thinking. Sorry, Momow, we are buying the DVD to watch the model, not to see what kind of annoying, b.s. tricks and gimmicks you can do with the camera and editing equipment.

After a rather brief (40 seconds) and desultory montage – in fact the live action menu (above) provides a better montage than the actual montage, Momow gives us our first look at the first of the 8 main chapters. The image below is no more than a few frames into the first second of the opening chapter.

As you can see, it is colored, slightly out of focus, and doesn’t even provide a good look at Miyabi’s face. In this opening shot and sequence, Miyabi will provide some shoulder movement which causes her breasts to move as well. What also happens is that these ‘painterly effects‘ accompany this motion, which further inhibits us from getting a good look at her, and is simply a distraction.

This over-saturated not quite blue sequence lasts 12 seconds. Then there’s a change to a fuller red…

…which lasts less than one second. Then you get this shot (below).

Momow then zooms in and down to her shoe level before using a rapid, sweeping shot to go from her toes to above her head. He repeats this SIX times in a row before finally slowing down to allow us to see Miyabi Isshiki’s face without it whizzing by. Only look how washed out this closeup is, and that’s because he has too much light on her face.

This shot is just at 01:26 into the main chapters, and already I am angry, frustrated, and disappointed. And we’ve only just begun. Or from a different perspective: the first minute and half have been totally wasted.

But wait, it continues. This next shot above is the beginning of a sequence that runs between 10 and 12 seconds. It looks a bit out of focus , doesn’t it? It is a closeup of her face, and Momow intentionally brings this in and out of focus, again and again. Does the director think we will find this interesting, arty, or even the least bit appealing. Well it isn’t!

The rest of Chapter One has Miyabi pouring oil on her body – much of it is seemingly applied to the outside of her top. We do get to appreciate the size of her vast bust, but you soon beginning asking your self – what’s the rush, how about lingering so we can get a good look.? And you’ll find that scant attention is paid to the lighting, so we get glare far too frequently.

Chapter Two is at that indoor swimming pool that we’ve seen again and again in both gravure and AV videos. The camera movements have slowed down quite a bit in this chapter, and the lighting is fine, but I can’t give this chapter kudos as it has problems such as not enough cleavage, a garish pink inflated float, and many mis-timed transfers when bringing the camera from below the surface of the water to above. Miyabi bends forward to allow more cleavage under water and he brings the camera above the surface. Or when she stands upright so most of her cleavage is above the surface, the director submerges the camera. Maddening!

Three begins with the director having asked Miyabi to enter through the curtains ass first. Which he then vignettes (darkens the corners). When she finally does come in forwardly, the camera is at floor level.

She is masked, and a nice mask it is – but we want to see the model, so why have a mask? Eventually she crawls onto a white fur throw at the base of the curtain. At last the mask does come off so the director can feed Miyabai – a banana.

The next chapter has Miyabi in pink. She’s been asked to massage her boobs and her butt with a gooey gel. For most of the chapter we don’t see her face. The entire setting is in the dark except for the pin spotlights, so we never really see where we are. When we do see Miyabi’s face it is to come out of the shadowy dark so when the camera goes in for a closeup, her hands which are below the camera’s view, can be replenished with more of the gooey gel. I might have liked the scene had it been shot in a well lighted area but it wasn’t.

The next chapter is rather pointless beginning and ending with decent lighting. There”s some nice closeups of Miyabi, and we can see she’s wearing black fishnets and a corsette/bustier rig. She doesn’t do much of anything while seated on the settee except to run her hands over her legs and bust. Soon she’s back in a shadowy atmosphere. The the lights come up a bit and she walks out of the scene. As I said – pointless!

Just when you thought that you’ve had enough of the light and shadow gimmicks, we get it again. This time it is a decent chapter despite the light and shadows. Miyabi is in black and she’ll show plenty of cleavage in this one. And some how she ends up in a bath tub. So this is the first chapter that I can honestly say I liked. Despite the darkness.

Well, instead of the video going forward and improving, we next seem to be repeating some of the stuff I hated earlier. As the next chapter begins, we find Miyabi wearing a black sequined bikini. She’s eating an ice cream cone. We are in a basement from what I can tell. This time Momow sweeps the camera from floor to ceiling SEVEN TIMES before bringing us to a solid shot (above) where Miyabi has her arm in front of her and she’s eating the cone. We see a few drips fall into her cleavage. A few more up and down sweeps are repeated, albeit slowly.

Miyabi finally lowers her arm a bit, so we see her face. More ice creams drips. More slow ceiling to feet sweeps. Momow seems intent on showing us a two large oil drums, red and black, that Miyabi stands between. Another momentary pause, then SEVEN MORE RAPID head to toe sweeps.

Really!. I’m not making this up.

The scene seems to last forever. Plenty of ice creams drips from the cone into her cleavage.
She’ll use her fingers to scoop the ice cream out of the cone so it can drip into her cleavage from her mouth.

She’ll put the whole cone into her cleavage and squeeze her boobs together. She’ll squeeze her boobs upward so she can bend her head forward to lick the ice cream from the cone so it can dribble back out of her mouth into her cleavage again.
Ultimately she’ll crush the cone between her boobs so a big glob of ice cream will fall off, into her hand, so she can put it back on her chest. Really I’m not making this up.

The last chapter has Miyabi in a colorful red bra and panties with white floral designs on it. She sits on a chair with a red silk throw on it. The walls are red too.

Nothing much happens at all. Just an opportunity for us to gaze at Miyabi’s huge breasts crammed into a pretty bra. At least the scene wasn’t bad. At 1:07 and change the scene ends.

The last two and a half minutes have Miyabi in a big terry cloth robe seated in her dressing room. She talks to us, basically about the DVD experience for her. Fade out.

Summary: Anyone can point a camera at a woman. Anyone could have done a better job with a busty model like Miyabi than what we are asked to accept here. I’m scoring this at three point zero. Miyabi herself is responsible for all but a quarter of one point.

Whatever was good about this DVD , the credit should go to Miyabi. The director Momow gets that quarter of a point for this utter failure. Because he is the responsible party for everything that is wrong with this video. Hey, I hope the producer at Air Control, responsible for hiring Momow, gets tossed out along with Momow.

This was a waste of time, and to have released this DVD, thereby putting it up for sale, shows great disrespect for the consumers.

Unfortunate, but not really surprising. Mind you, Momow has proved (in my mind) that he can direct a decent, if not actually good, idol video, but seems to be steadily going downhill. Although you disagreed, Hanai Miri’s In Secret was a damned good DVD. The next DVD I encountered him was Maison De Miri – which was still good but not up to the previous disc. Then the mediocre twins of Miri-onaire and Isshiki Miyabi’s Miyabi Iro were unleashed and the quality drop in was shocking. Colourful seems to continue his downward spiral.
Miyabi really deserves better – her debut Boob! was one of my favourites when it was released, and her follow-ups, pre-break, were also really good. However since she returned from hiatus, she’s been saddled with Momow and perhaps the downturn in quality might harm her future prospects (unless, of course, she is planned to leave modelling anyway and these last few discs are just fulfilling a contractual obligation).
I watched Texas Chainsaw Massacre 3 a few days back… I enjoyed it back in the day but even then was aware of the huge plotholes, incongruencies and what not, but this time, I also noticed that the editing made it worse (probably to edit out some gore) and more confusing. I didn’t hear the commentary track but it seems all directors always whine about studios messing with them or simply being underfinanced…
Which brings me to Momow, well, I guess he/she might said that the DVD was underfinanced as the whole product screams of cheapness: 4:3 ratio, simple “menu”, indoors… etc. I guess Momow tried to made it up with some “artsy” scenes… but, failed big time imo. So, as much as I want to lead a lynch mob to Momow’s headquarters, I blame the producers as well (and maybe Momow produced this as well?)
I know sending girl+crew to a beach location is expensive, but Miyabi under the sun is a sure fire formula for success!!! All they need is proper lighting and her body (and face) will take care of the rest!!!
Still, I’ll say that I’m pretty impressed by Miyabi herself, I’m sorry to admit that my interest for Hana has diminished a bit -nothing serious, though-, but Ms Isshiki still holds up great (after 2 years :p) and I actually think looks better than ever!!

Back for another bite into Momow’s street creds are we?
I could forgive technical errors, I could forgive audio glitches, even poor choices in music. But I can’t forgive:
- shooting a model like Miyabi iin the dark
- no purpose sweeps and pans repeated ad nauseum
- and a constant desire to upstage the model with editing
Give me more of Miyabi and less Momow. Case closed.
