The Skinny: Welcome back Miyabi Isshiki. Long time no see. And welcome back Zatoichi. Yes readers, this will be another joint review. Basically two guys sitting around talking about Miyabi’s tits. And why not – that’s what the director wants us to see. That’s what he’s looking at through his view finder most of the time. Let’s have Zatoichi (hereafter referred to as Z) get things started.
Z – I’ve been watching gravure idol videos for a fair amount of time, and never (at least not in recent memory) have I seen a director’s credit featured as prominently as it is with Isshiki Miyabi’s new release, Miyabi Iro.
JMM – Me too, I’m a long time watcher too. The DVD is also known as Miyabi Colors.
Z – Once the opening montage rolls, there it is, as plain as day, in a gaudy gold font: Momow. Perhaps this should have been a warning sign of the train wreck to come. Well, perhaps “train-wreck” is little harsh, but it’s at least a two or three car pile-up.
JMM – I’ll call it a minor fender-bender dust-up rather than a collision. Usually you have to wait until the final credits roll to find out who did what. And you’re likely to fast forward through them when they’re at the end. Here Momow jumps right in and there’s no way to miss it.
Z - I get the feeling Momow has delusions of grandeur as Miyabi’s long awaited follow up to _Good To Go!_ is, at best, what Russ Meyer might have done with a gravure idol video. And no, to you fans of camp, this is not a compliment. Like the late Mr. Meyer, he’s obsessed with boobs (although in Miyabi’s case, it’s hard to blame him!)…
JMM – I think we are obsessed too…don’t you?
Z - Right…and no one is paying us for our efforts. But Momow’s work, like Meyer’s, is so obsessed with tits that nothing else gets through. At worst, it’s a pedestrian idol video which is still made watchable by having a gorgeous model like Miyabi as the subject.
JMM – Gorgeous? Of course. Huge busted? Definitely! Yeah, I’m on the same page as you with that, with one addition – here, there is a huge emphasis on colors, you know – walls, sofas, etc, as the title might suggest.
Z – People won’t buy this DVD for the colors. But they will buy it for the tits, but back to ‘obsession’. Not that this has probably ever stopped anyone from buying an idol DVD, but the video quality is some of the worst I’ve ever seen on a supposedly professional product – compression artifacts are everywhere and obvious.
JMM – So des (this is true). He figured no would mind given Miyabi’s mind-boggling dimensions.
Z - The DVD runs about 70 minutes over the span of eight different scenes.
After a short introduction of the scene by Miyabi, we’re transplanted into a bedroom with Miyabi.
JMM – Miyabi seemingly introduces each scene. Most of these are just brief glimpses. She seems to adjust the lens bringing it into focus. Hardly necessary; speaking of the mini-intro’s of course.
Z – She’s wearing a yellow mesh two piece. The holes are extremely large so she also has on some black panties as well as some flower-shaped pasties over her nipples. The pasties are a reoccurring piece of “wardrobe” throughout the DVD – appearing in half the scenes. Miyabi playfully stretches, bounces and slinks around on the bed, as the camera cuts to various angles, most of which take full advantage of her jiggling assets.
JMM – He also uses a lot of pans and zooms to create those various angles…
Z - Two odd choices in this scene: at one point Miyabi stops to brush her teeth, at which point it’s pretty much nothing but a static shot of her breasts.
JMM- Hold on, you’re forgetting about the yogurt which she eats with a spoon, and manages to spill into her cleavage a few times.
Z – Oh yeah, that’s right. But at the end when the scene completely changes – different room, different costume – while the music remains the same (the scene is actually from the last track). It’s more than a little jarring.
JMM – Not to mention inexplicable.
Z - Scenes two and three are both pool based. The former starts out well enough, with Miyabi at poolside in a one piece which will be totally useless once she takes it off due to stretching.
JMM – You know, Hana Haruna wore that same bathing suit in her most recent DVD, Haruhana. Also released by Air Control/Melon.
Z - So des ka? (Is that so?) … About halfway through, the entire scene becomes her massaging her tits. Sound good? At first, it is incredible, but then it keeps going. And going. And going. It actually becomes boring.
JMM – I’m going to have to agree with that. Too much of a good thing, seemingly endless…
Z – with the uninspired camera work, and Miyabi just keeps doing the basic same motions over and over again. A little variation in her routine could have gone a long way to making this a lot more erotic. Still, Miyabi touching her chest is nothing to sneeze at either.
JMM – Man, those things are so big…
Z – The following scene has Miyabi back in the pool, bikini-clad this time, fooling around in the water. The problem: most of the scene is filmed underwater and is dull, even with her pneumatic chest on screen at all times. Slow moving and forgettable.
JMM – Slow moving sure. But those shimmering, wobbling beauties are not going to be easy to forget. But yeah, he might have made some better choices, like standing out of the pool shooting down into her cleavage from above.
Z – More water follows as Miyabi entertains us in a run down bathroom, complete with disco mirrored ball. Don’t ask – I’ve no idea why it is there. She’s wearing a much too small tartan bikini (so much so that the pasties are back),
JMM - Now that I think of it, Hana wore a tartan bikini in her last one too But it was blue-based and this one is red-based. I wonder if Momow directed that one as well?
Z – Miyabi again proceeds to give her chest a thorough massage as liquid occasionally drips onto her. Of note is that her areola are quite obvious – even with the pasties, you can see the edges poking out along the side. Totally fetishistic but very well done due to some good camera work and some great movement by Miyabi.
JMM – And the fact that once she’s in the tub, he employed only direct lighting – you can’t really see much of the room at all. He truly ‘spotlighted’ the boobs – pun intended.
Z – Number five finds Miyabi in a room with a bright blue couch wearing a school girls athletic uniform, albeit several sizes too small. As her abundantly filled white t-shirt is quite transparent, the pasties are back, “protecting” her assets.
JMM – Yeah, pasties under the tee-shirt was a mistake. Maybe they tried bare beneath the tee-shirt and things got a little too ‘pointy’.
Z – Good one. Like the second track, this one starts off well enough with Miyabi acting cute and sexy and giving us some less-than-pure thoughts, but halfway through it’s like Momow couldn’t think of what to do so he just had her bounce up and down for the remainder.
JMM – Yup, starts off well, and then he’s stuck for an alternative.
Z - Now, generally speaking a bouncing Miyabi would be one of things I’d rank as a wonder of the world, but it goes on for too long and the camera work is quite dull. Well done, Momow – you’ve made bouncing tits boring.
JMM – Inconceivable but true. You want to shout at the screen - do something else!!!
Z – Miyabi is wearing a sheer black top which is totally transparent in the next scene. Of course, our friends (or enemies depending on your perspective) the pasties are back. This is probably the most blatantly sexual track on the disc, as many of her movements recall sex or masturbation. More than usual I mean.
JMM – Like when she straddles the back of the big armchair and humps herself on it…
Z - This one worked pretty well as a piece of erotica and should have you headed for a cold shower after viewing.
JMM – Maybe it was the continually up and down movement, and maybe it was the changing of focus, or the repetitive pan shots…worked for me too. I muddled through without taking a cool-down shower. That came later.
Z – Next up, the obligatory massage-the-idol-scene which is required under penalty of expulsion from the Society Of Gravure Idol Video Makers. Miyabi slinks around on a couch in a blue bikini for a few moments before lying down and letting an anonymous pair of female hand massage baby oil all over her. Especially her boobs. Notable for only how many times I thought her boobs were going to free themselves as she was getting rubbed, this one is nothing new if you’re even remotely familiar with the idol scene in the last five or six years.
JMM – Well, there was a brief few moments when he positioned the camera behind her head and we could gaze past her head into her cleavage. This was done just twice. But it is a rather ‘new’ angle.
Z – Yeah, I forgot that shot.
JMM – As I said it was brief.
Z – The ultimate scene (which we got a preview of way back in track one for no discernible reason) has Miyabi in a blindingly pink bedroom with a giant teddy bear and wearing a set of strapless pink, ruffled, lingerie. How her top never fell down I’ll never know – screw you physics!
JMM – I thought this was the most sexual of these scenes, like when she’s …
Z – … on top of the bear. She’s then lying down as the camera hovers over her while she clutches her naked boobs with her hands. She mimes some tit fucking for a bit, the bear covers her up and we’re done.
JMM – It’s more like the bear appears to collapse on top of her. Which leads to the finishing scene, which has Miyabi seated on a sofa talking to us.
Summary: Z – While I’d definitely lay most of the blame for the faults of _Miyabi Iro_ at the feet of the director, Miyabi still seems a little unnatural in front of the camera on occasion.
JMM – Like when she has to speak as herself instead of being in character…
Z – Still, she’s generally a joy to behold and possesses one of the best bodies working the industry today.
JMM – Amen to that. The big-boob lovers will have a good time with this one – in spots. The bright rich colors, the music tracks, help, but…I think the DVD isn’t as good taken as a whole as it is in spots.
Z – Meaning?
JMM – When you look at the the vidcaps, Miyabi looks spectacular. But…
Z – When those shots are viewed as complete scenes, the overall is less than you’d expect from the caps. Got it. Despite the short comings of the DVD, I’d give it a slight recommendation at 3.25.
JMM – I’m going to give the same points. And I’ll also recommend it with reservations.
Z – Let’s just hope Momow either improves his directorial skills for his next outing or he’s sent back to his day job.
JMM – BTW – I couldn’t determine if Momow directed Hana in Haruhana.
Z - Let’s also hope that Miyabi graces her fans with another (and better) DVD in the future.

JMM - per a request from one reader who asked in a comment below, that we show a bit of that areola peeking out – I know I saw them. Like a small segment where the skin color had changed marking an outer edge – but finding the exact frame is easier said than done. I found one in an underwater shot – but couldn’t find the ones in the bathtub scene. Here it is;

LOL–you guys are like Siskel & Ebert. Seriously, thanks for the review. As you implied, some of us don’t necessarily watch idol DVDs for the artistry, and as a huge fan of Miyabi’s, I am grateful she has returned to making DVDs after the scant Decup offerings of the past year. In comparison with her prior efforts, it could have been better, and with few exceptions the outfits were not inspired, but any Miyabi is better than none.
I do take exception to the criticisms aimed at the t-shirt scene. I thought that was teriffic. Could have watched an entire 70 minutes of that. Nothing wrong with pasties, either. If you’re getting to see that much tit in an idol video, there’s no complaints.
In future efforts, I’d like to see Miyabi out in the sun, in bikinis and tight, low-cut shirts. Some of the stuff she’s shoehorned into is pretty weird.

In past versions of AoV, Argyle has joined me in a joint review, and has even penned a solo review for us back in the day. His contributions are appreciated.
I don’t mind her wearing the tee-shirt, exercising in the tee-shirt, or having the tee-shirt absorb the overflow of water – so for me it wasn’t so much the appearance of Miyabi in the tee-shirt and shorts as much as it was the repetitive action.
Yes, we are happy to have Miyabi on screen. And yes, I concur with Argyle’s wish-list to have Miyabi go out of doors, and look great in some bikinis and revealing outfits. Those type of scenes would be most welcome.
What are you waiting for Takeshobo and I-One? Gather up your productions crews and get them and Miyabi off to a tropical beach asap.

Siskel & Ebert? More like Statler and Waldorf!!! Nah, I’m just kidding. The captures are breathtaking, but it is a bummer to hear that the video does not live up to them… I don’t know what you think about Yuna Kawase, but I get the feeling Miyabi might be turning to a version of her, which is not nice for me as Yuna, as amazing as she was/is, made some very boring videos, imo.
Well, it is only her first video after her time off, so maybe it is too soon to tell.
Would it be shocking if it was revealed that Momow is a woman?

Hi JMM,
I’ve been reading your reviews since the BEArchive days, and wanted to say thanks for your continuing effort. Do you have any interest/plans to return to doing non-idol video reviews? Or will you be sticking to offerings from our Japanese friends from here on out?
Also, you mention above at one point, “Of note is that her areola are quite obvious – even with the pasties…” but don’t include a screen shot? Very frustrating!

Z and I consider Miyabi as one of the best gravure idols out there. When she gets a 3.25 it doen’t mean she’s lost something – she’s as great looking as ever. This one was given a lowered rating because it’s (the DVD) just not that good. But watching Miyabi for for 70 minutes is still worthwhile.

Unfortunately, Yuna Kawase had a fool for an agent (I guess), and he couldn’t get her work with the right production houses. As such, most of her video work was abysmal. In fact she got the all time lowest rating ever for one of her videos.
A 1.75
Personally I loved watching he,r but the DVDs were either bad or mediocre. The highest rating I ever gave a Yuna Kawase video was 3.75 bit only once.
I ‘m fairly certain that Miyabi Isshiki’s career will fare a whole lot better – but I have yet to figure out why no one has whisked her off to Bali, Phuket, Pattaya, Saipan, Guam, or Cebu etc., for a video.
As Argyle said, she’d look wonderful in a bikini on a beach.

I guess Miyabi made me to blackout as now I remember reading them… I was jumping at the gun fearing Isshiki heading the same way, but I think that Yuna is one of the “lost gravure superstars” although Erina Yamaguchi seems to be the one most remembered, and I would hate Miyabi turning into another Ms Kawase.
Hopefully, Miyabi’s latest IV will do well enough to get her more work, although this seems to be a very crowded summer in terms of releases.

Thanks for your long time readership. The last of my reveiws at the BEA in R&D was in March and April of 2006.
I’ve ordered a DVD with Karina Hart, and will likely do a review on that one. But in the main, I’m going to be a specialist in the Idol genre. I’m not absolutely stating that Idol videos are all I’ll do – as you know I’m still doing pieces on art with an occasional tie-in to American movies – but I’m fairly certain that I won’t be doing h/c or XXX either Japanese or American, or European.
But if the case is right – we will show nude bodies.
I did edit the Miyabi piece adding a shot of the edge of an areola. Was harder to find than I thought. This little snippet of an areola is not a major selling point of the video. But you asked, so I did my best.

BTW – I also reviewed both of Erina Yamaguchi’s two videos. The first one great, the 2nd one, her last, was called the Great J or something like that, but it wasn’t great at all.
Sadly for us, Erina left the industry for real life and hasn’t been seen since.

Hi Hi!
Well, despite my frustration about this release that wasn’t what I was expecting from Miyabi, I have/got to say that I had a real good time with this review in particular because your “work-as-a-couple” was excellent.
And talking about this huge return of Miyabi, we knew from the start that she has a powerful body so, the shoots would be very often on her boobs and the rest of her figure but, you know, she doesn’t look a fresh face like in her previous dvds and this time there’s an artificial face like she was doing something for money but not with her spirit into it.
Moreover, her costumes are not the best for her, I mean, if you have to work with a girl with a body like that you should take advantage an use your brain because the posibilities are endless but not this time and I’m not talking about Miyabi’s performance that lacks of creativity (Mr. Momow, you are a moron!).
I don’t know, honestly, I’m dissapointed with this release.
If I could be the director of a simple chapter with Miyabi, give a camera, a towel and that’s it, I could do a lot better work.
Anyway, thank you for this great review (talking about you and mr. Z of course) and I hope more like this in the future ^^.
Encore01. Just a comment. I got my “Seishun Dynamic 3″ dvd by Hitomi Aizawa, a very good release though it isn’t as good as the previous Seishun and, you know, this time Ms. Aizawa looks more “meaty”, I said that because I got hungry after watching it ^^. 4.25 will be my score and I hope that you can review it, I would like to know your opinion. And what I really know is that she’s still my number one idol.

To tell you the truth, I was in shock with such a beauty (her face reminded me to Kana Tsugihara ^^) and, like I should, I started looking for information about her and soon I knew that her name was Akiho Yoshizawa but almost inmediately and sadly at the same time I discovered that she is, in fact, an AV Idol ¬¬… … … and my face was full of deception (isn’t there a shotgun to shoot myself at?).
Why?… I asked myself Why a girl that beautiful should go into the dark side? C’mon I would be please to marry a girl like her (and who doesn’t @_@?) but it seems that sometimes is not enough for some girls.

What can we say – the Miyabi was disappointing. I guess they try experiments to do a gravure DVD without a beach, and without a whole slew of bikinis. Some work better than others.
The JMM review of Seishun Dynamic Vol. 3 is up – I loved it.
As for your other Encore comments, it seems that there are many, many, many very beautiful Japanese women doing the JAV work. They must have their reasons is all I’ll say.

I just wanted to follow up on a comment above–I agree that Miyabi didn’t come across as all that interested in this DVD. I don’t understand Japanese, but having had a go at her blog with a translation tool it seems that she has been staying busy with photoshoots and some cosplay work, so we may see some more releases from her in the future. However, also coming across in the blog is some boredom or even disenchantment with the work she that she has been doing as of late. I’m not sure what to read into that, but I hope she’ll keep up the IV career for at least another couple of years. Like JMM suggested, I’d love to see her with I-One.

In particular to Argyle: the track with Miyabi bouncing around in the t-shirt was just not well done. I think it’s a combination of Miyabi’s relative inexperience as well as Momow’s incompetence behind the camera that made things… eh… I don’t know – forgettable. Just look at Miyabi! How could those things flying around go wrong?!? Yet somehow….
If you take a look at some of the discs the sadly retired (or at least on hiatus) Takeuchi Nozomi, sometimes all she does is bounce around in scene. Yet it worked – she was a master at doing this and maining a level of sexiness and enthusiasm that just didn’t seem present in this scene. Nozomi knew how to work the camera in a way that Miyabi doesn’t (yet). It’s true that people buy idol discs to ogle the women, but sometimes a little but of acting and natural charisma makes all the difference.
And for anyone who thinks that JMM and I were being hard on Momow, the director – he (or she) is just that bad. He also directed Hanai Miri’s new one (which will be getting its own review soon) and lo and behold: even more mediocrity. Not only did Momow use the same location as Miyabi Iro, but he seemed to film the same scenes, just slotting in a different gravure idol. It does fair a little better than Miyabi Iro, but not much and only due to Miri’s experience in front of the camera. Thanks for nothing, Momow.

Hey Guys – I was away for a few days – thanks for keeping those comments coming in. A lively discussion among readers as well as contributors is appreciated.
While I have the Miri Hanai new DVD, I’ve watched only the montage so far. And I did not know that Miri’s video was directed by Momow at that time I watched the montage.
Zatoichi will be doing the review of the Miri solo – I am steering clear of it until I have his review up and published.
Well with all the JUNE RELEASES – we still have the July releases of Hitomi Kitamura, Hana Haruna, and the double release from Nonami Takizawa to look forward too.
