The Skinny: I guess it depends on who you ask. This title was Mai Uzuki’s entry into the gravure world and was released back last September. There wasn’t much buzz about this video. Sure, she’s quite busty (likely surgically enhanced), and pretty. But this DVD flew under the radar; until very recently, when it was announced that Mai would be leaving the Gravure world (IV for Idol Video) for the dark-side, otherwise known as Adult Video (AV). Once they cross over, they don’t come back for awhile, or in some cases – ever, so we thought we’d have a look at her and share our opinions with you.
Air Control/Melon has long been known for their 90 minute idol DVDs. Now 90 minutes is a long time in the world of gravure idols, especially since so many of them have just their brief ’15 minutes’ of fame. Others, like my colleague Zatoichi, have said that 90 minutes means that there’s likely some dangerously bloated scenes that could easily stand for a more concerted effort by the cutter, aka video editor. I’ve agreed with that precept myself. Let’s see if it holds true in this video.
After what amounts to a double montage (The Chapter Card is actually a montage itself plus a standard montage) about 3 minutes and 20 seconds have whizzed by. Unfortunately the expression ‘whizzed by’ will not apply again for the duration of the video. Mai greets us and enters what looks like a chapel. It’s not overtly specific to any religion, but I can tell the difference between pews and auditorium seating.
Mai seems eager to show off her flower petal panties beneath her pantie hose. Beneath her sweater? Well it’s just Mai. For most of the next 10 and half minutes Mai remains seated sideways on one of the pews having managed to open her sweater and lower it off her shoulders. This is what we mean by bloated scenes. Too little happens for far too long.
Mai wears a white bikini by the pool in the next chapter. When we greet her she’s already seated and is pouring some sun lotion into her palm. It’s a slow moving scene of nearly seven minutes.
We watch Mai applying the sun lotion and then she straddles the the upright out of the water part of the ladder that people use to pull themselves out of the pool. Did I say slow moving? Well feel free to add boring to that.
Mai sets out jogging in a red bikini next. Then she jumps rope. They might have left these three minutes plus on the cutting room floor.
Mai wears a skimpy bandeau top bikini next. We have to call this the jacuzzi scene as when they begin we can’t hear anything else but the sound of the jacuzzi. Eventually the music begins. And finally we have an excellent scene. There’s not much movement by the model but there’s plenty of cleavage on display.
Next Mai wears a sleeveless and basically side-less zippered sweatshirt. First she applies lotion to her legs. The she gets a good hold of her boobs under her sweatshirt. But then comes the rolling spiked tool. Even though her breasts are plenty big, this scene fails as the model doesn’t get much of an opportunity to move. She’s in contact with the same set of chairs throughout the entire scene.
At this point we are 39 minutes into the 90 minute DVD and now Mai is back in the red bikini. She’s bouncing on a silver ball. She does a voice over as this is actually another part of an interview. The questions appear in script on screen, and apparently I missed that in the first segment which was the jogging scene in the red bikini.
To close out the first half of the DVD, Mai does a bit as a housekeeper. She wears an apron and panties. Her breasts are not going to fall out from under the apron even though they look like they surely will. She’s asked to pick up some fruit which is rolled across the floor. Yup – I kid you not. The fruit is rolled across the floor. All of this as a prelude to Mai eating a banana before she climbs up and straddles the arm of chair. Mai will tease us with the opened apron, but you’re not going to see anything more than the side of one breast or the bottoms of both breasts. Of course, as we’ve seen before in this video, the director likes his models either seated or seated.
Next Mai is in a bath or is it a shower? Either way, she’s lying on the floor. A gooey gel is dripped onto her. Her top is completely unbuttoned. If you are the least bit curious, like me, you’re probably going to be asking yourself, like I did, when does the shower start. It doesn’t. She’ll use the shower head as massage tool.
We can write off the next chapter. Mai is dresses in a light leopard skin outfit complete with ears. She’ll be given an ice-cream on a stick. Make that two ice creams on a stick.’ Nuf said?
We are now at the sixty two minute mark and I’ve liked just one scene. The next has some promise. Mai wears a white blouse and a tight skirt. She’s in the bedroom. She’ll strip down to bra and panties. Sound good? Not so fast buster, they don’t give out ‘good’ very easily in this DVD. So what’s wrong this time – the whole scene, which runs about 10 minutes, is in low light. Aaargh! I had to apply some photo editing tools to brighten the image so you could see here what was much harder to see on screen.
Next out of the chute we have Mai in a gauzy bit of material. She looks great but she doesn’t do anything. They’ll change angles here and there, and if you blink, you might miss the fact that the credits are rolling in this scene. Only they’re in very small letters. It’s almost like they hope you miss them.
Eventually Mai will begin to untie this gauzy material revealing some of the bottoms of her boobs. The she stands behind the see through window curtain. Now this is interesting, but ultimately unsatisfying.
And that’s it. This is the end of the main chapters. We still have ten minutes to go. Questions appear in writing on the bottom of the screen. Mai does a voice over. What we get to see during this audio interview are some of the set ups for still photography that ocurred during the shoot. There’s also some behind the scenes footage.
Summary: I liked the model, hated the DVD. Unimaginative direction, very little movement by the model, and the music seemed to rarely fit the visuals. To give you an idea about how bad this was, the shot below was Mai talking to us for most of the last minute of the DVD. It’s so dark you can barely see her. Yet this was left in. Sorry Air Control – you guys dropped the ball on this one. The rating is two point seven five, and I’m not recommending the video.
Well, now we know why there wasn’t any buzz about this DVD. We can wish Mai good luck with her career in AV. It has come to my attention that Mai will launch her AV career by appearing for 4 different AV studios, which I understand is unheard of.
