The Skinny: Longtime no see. It has been a while since we’ve reviewed a DVD from Aqua House. They’re noted for usually producing DVD’s with models with rather large busts. And this one fits right into that mode. It’s a by-the-numbers production, not really different from any other gravure idol DVD. But the location on Iejima Island, which is part of Okinawa Prefecture, did make for some pretty shots and locations.
Chiri Arikawa is given the starring role in this DVD called ChiriChiri Mode. The DVD runs about 75 minutes including a seven minute making of/behind the scenes segment which follows the credits. Chiri is rather short and her bust is very full and high. She’s cheerful and fun to watch. I think there are 13 or 14 chapters set in various island locations Let’s look closer at some of the scenes.
After the splendid montage, we find Chiri on a desolate beach. While the scene is pretty, somehow I get the impression that the director hadn’t given her much in the way of prior instructions. It’s not that she stood around with a blank look waiting to be told what to do. But the way the scene was edited, you can probably tell that she did wait for instructions, and those inactive moments had been edited out.
Chiri is next in a lovely wooded area. She wears a standard schoolgirl uniform. A nice dog is called into action and he shares the screen with Chiri for a few moments before she goes inside a house to pose on the tatami mats both in uniform and without.
Three is the usual gravure DVD filler scene. Here we have Chiri scrambling some eggs. Ho hum. Let’s move on.
Back outdoors, Chiri greets us wearing a bold red tee-shirt dress, which I guess is the best way to describe it. Its got a hood but is otherwise backless and nearly sideless and very short. They pose her in an abandoned building. I thought this was one of the better scenes in the whole DVD.
A short scene by a swimming pool follows. But she doesn’t go in the water beyond getting a few toes wet, and it is quite brief. IMHO this was more filler.
Back in bed is next. They’ve got her in a revealing top. The prop is a box filled with questions and topics written on sheets of paper. Chiri will select these at random, hold them up so we can see them, and then respond. If you don’t speak Japanese or cannot read the Japanese writing, all you’ll be able to do is watch her. From the first sheet she pulled out, I recognized her saying the word kekkon which means marriage. Another one that she pulled out had a question mark. So this was in fact a stylized solo interview.
But they don’t stay with that gimmick for too long. Soon Chiri is rolling about on the bed, still in the revealing top, and that makes the scene worthwhile.
Chiri wears an unusual blue trimmed in white bathing suit next. Inexplicably and despite the fact that she looks very good in this costume, the scene runs only about 4 minutes. A mistake for sure. But we were able to grab some nice images from the scene anyway.
Back in the hotel room is next. Chiri poses in a bikini on a bed. This is also a short scene. Come to think of it, most of the scenes were short. This is actual a positive as we got 14 scenes in about 70 minutes of the main chapters. That’s 5 minutes per scene. So at times we may wish for more of a specific scene, but on an overall basis, we don’t have any of the bloated and overlong scenes which we see in other productions to their detriment.
A playful Chiri in pink is next outdoors. Here she is more active than in any of the prior scenes. They make use of a children’s playground for this scene. Then we switch back indoors. Chiri poses in a lovely kimono. She won’t take it off, but she does tug it down off her shoulder to enhance the posing.
The last scene follows. Here Chiri wears a snugly fitting pink trimmed with orange one piece bathing suit. Not only is this the last of the main chapters, it is also the best. I’ve always appreciated these form fitting one-piece bathing suits as they truly show off the model’s shapeliness. And the director hit a home run with the scene by waiting for the late afternoon sun which added a nice tone to the lighting.
Summary: While the overall DVD is not outstanding, a few of the scenes are very well done. Chiri Arikawa is new to the gravure business, and we hope she will get more contracts for gravure DVD’s. As I stated in the Intro above, this was a by-the-numbers production.
But the short scenes give us a lot of scenes and this is a good thing. I’ll rate this one at three point seven five but I will recommend the video as I believe Chiri Arikawa seems to fall into the Hitomi Kitamura class of gravure idols.
