Hitomi Kitamura – Hit Me! (2007)
Kadokawa Pictures/Perfect Choice
Catalogue # DABA-0395 Region 2 Disc

The Skinny: One of Kadokawa Pictures 5 Major Fall releases. They’ve done a far better job with this one than they did with the lamentable Undress, Megumi Kagurazaka’s final gravure DVD. In a relatively short time – Hitomi Kitamura’s first DVD was released just two years ago in October 2005 – Ms. Kitamura has rocketed from being an unknown to now being considered one of the most in demand gravure idols. Additionally, she has worked as an actress, and has recorded some music CD’s. BTW, she’s always quite welcome on my DVD player any time, day or night.

We are going to meet Hitomi in Pattaya, Thailand. As usual you are going to be thrilled by the opportunity to look at her. That is, you will like what you see, but you’ll be furious because the Kadokawa director can’t manage to stand still, keep his hands still, or to leave the zoom control untouched. Imagine this in your mind’s eye:

There’s the model. The cameraman is before her. He is using his hands to move the camera up and down, then back up, or panning left to right, right to left, as well as zooming in and out. Then they’ve over-edited the scene, favoring the fade cut. There’s no such thing as a long take where the camera looks at the subject and gives the viewer more than a fleeting chance to enjoy his view.

Mind you, this Japanese director is not doing a Russ Meyer, where the cuts are so rapid that they become a caricature of formal film editing. No, the combination of many edits along with the near continual camera motion are just distracting, and you as the viewer, will notice this, with ever increasing, and ever growing annoyance.

This is not to say that DVD is unwatchable or lacks highlights. I am not saying anything of the sort. After all, the wonderful Hitomi, who is one of the most voluptuous of all the gravure idols, is eminently watchable. And her stunning figure with those huge boobs and well rounded hips can elicit oohs and aahs from all except the dead.

There’s an excellent variety of scenes, locales, and activities. Watch Hitomi on the beach or in the pool. Enjoy her interacting with an elephant. She will appear as a Thai boxer, as a cheerleader, and as a typical Japanese student wearing a version of the classic uniform. Other pluses include the exotic tropical vegetation which appears as a supporting player on occasion, the upbeat music none f which I had ever heard before, and the generally sunny weather.

And we must mention Hitomi’s growth in playing to the camera. Whatever the magic words were, I can’t tell you, but I can report that Hitomi is now one the best in attracting and engaging the viewers. There’s an abundance of eye contact, and Hitomi can smile easily, even when she knows the director has just concluded about 8 seconds of admiring her breasts. Which he does in every scene, again and again; the reference to eight seconds is of course, in this case, an overstatement!

Speaking of boobs, there’s not a one of you who will be able to conclude, after watching the DVD, that Hitomi was not blessed in that area. And we do get a multitude of opportunities to admire her breastworks.

Summary: We liked the DVD and yet must alert you to the fact that when watching this DVD you can’t help but notice the bad directorial decisions. You will have to work harder to enjoy this DVD than you might have expected. And that is the ‘bad news’. The good news is that Hitomi Kitamura is a stacked goddess whose body can be admired throughout the DVD – though not as maximized as we might like.

I am going to score this one at three point seven five, and give a ‘recommended with flaws’ status. Please take the opportunity to read Zatoichi’s review of this DVD at his site, Gravure Idol Jo.
