Marie Sukegawa – Marinin no Kyujitsu (2007)

The Skinny: A new idol and a new DVD just released in mid July. They fly off to Guam for the tropical location, and the weather disappoints. However, Marie does not disappoint. This is a very cute idol, and this is a very good debut DVD.

Even when things follow the path of those that came before, and you don’t see anything new and different, it doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy what you see. The newest idol on my horizon is Marie Sukegawa. And even though this production from E-Net Frontier is directed by-the-numbers, it is still surprising effective and entertaining.

Marie is short, toothsome, buxom, and she sports a pair of cute dimples. Straightaway you’re going to be saying, “Isn’t she cute?”. The opening is a half scene and half montage. The bedroom part (red top and in bed) shares time with the montage, and then montage shares space with Marie’s textual profile crawling across the bottom of the screen.

Next out by the pool, Marie stuns us in a marvelous red-striped bikini. Not only does she look very good in this rig, but the scene is lengthy. In a variance from by the numbers, the cameraman is in the pool and Marie isn’t for a good part of this chapter.

Marie is also willing to do some jogging. She out on a country lane. Not a car or person in sight. She doesn’t run very far, but she looked like she could.

The hotel sits high above the beach. Marie negotiates a series of steps before getting to the beach. She plays in the surf, jogs on the beach, and looks great. Her blue bikini top is a snug fit, and while this scene is relatively brief, it is a lot of fun to watch.

Back at the hotel, Marie has her hair swept up in the back, had added some make-up , and looks rather exotic in a sexy bedroom costume.

This is followed by one of the pretty girls in a sexy costume in a ramshackle and run down abandoned building. Her costume imcludes lots of glitter, smoky sexy fish net stockings, and lots of attitude. I’ve never been a fan of this type of scene.

Not because the models look this way or that way…but because however successful they look, they are still out of place. Juxtapositioning the abandoned and the alluring just seems kind of trite seeing how it has been done so many times.

At the conclusion of this scene, Marie is outside of the building, and while still in costume, she is no longer “in character”. She talks to us briefly as Marie, not as the character just on screen. She’s lively and animated and seems to be enjoying herself.

A sexy outdoor shower follows. Well, let me rephrase, Marie looks sexy as some water falls on her. Her very unusual bathing suit helps convey this message. As does Marie’s ‘defiant’ – as in I’m hot – look!.

The next chapter has Marie wearing a yellow one piece bathing suit, and she’s out in the hallway of the hotel. Nothing much happens as she’s seated on the carpeted floor throughout.

An interview follows via a split screen effect. A seated on a chair Marie answers questions that appear in text on the screen. Meanwhile in another quadrant of the screen, we watch as Marie is photographed. I’m not sure if asking a viewer to divide his attention is truly a good idea, but the images are quite good.

Under leaden skies Marie runs out to a spot on the beach. She’s suitably attired and she looks great. This is the finale of the main chapters as shortly after she hits or mark, the credit begin to roll.

Afterwards we get a lot of footage that Marie shot with her own camera in her hotel room. Just a pretty girl with a handi-cam talking to us, with occasional cuts to show us that’s there’s another camera in the room, being handled by a pro. Marie breaks into a song, Amazing Grace, and the shows us some new handbags, and personal items that she’s purchased including liquid soaps and Vicks Vap-o-Rub.

You can skip this. Trust me you can skip this. And while looking at Marie talking to us is pleasant enough, this isn’t what I want to see. So it’s going to cost them a quarter of a point. Even the sight of Marie opening up her pajama top to reveal a bright red top isn’t enough.

However, after the home movie, there’s a few minutes of behind the scenes which enable us to get a few more good looks at Marie, and these are worth your time.

Summary: Excluding Marie’s home movie, this was a pretty good debut. They’ve not set any new standards for others to follow, and the weather was a bummer, but Marie is a great gal to watch. Recommended if you’re looking for a bright new model, who might be a star in not too long a time.
